Chalk, Challenge and Change:
Stories from Women Teachers in Ontario 1920 – 1979

We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new book celebrating the history and heritage of classrooms across the province.  Chalk, Challenge and Change – Stories from Women Teachers in Ontario 1920 – 1979 takes you deep into the classrooms of the past. The as-told-by stories are about hiring and firing, struggles and celebrations, and the rewards of teaching under conditions that were often challenging…and worlds away from the classrooms of today. Vintage photos provided by the storytellers add an exciting dimension to the book.

Three and a half years in the making, Chalk, Challenge and Change was designed to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWTO).  Before historically significant personal recollections disappeared forever, 200 of the RWTO’s members, all aged 90+, were interviewed for the book, capturing their stories for all time. The result is an entertaining 325-page book that is sure to bring a smile and a tear to readers young and old. A perfect gift for that teacher on your list.

Gillian Hewitt of Keepsake Memoirs acted as Project Director, training all volunteers in oral history techniques, and overseeing the production from start to finish.

For the Love of Ollie – A Story of Compassion and Courage

This is the story of a brave little dog’s fight against syringomyelia (srin-go-mi-eelia), a debilitating disease that is threatening Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and other small breed dogs around the world.

In an effort to raise awareness of this disease and assist in the search for a cure, Sandy Smith describes how syringomyelia has affected her family and provides information and support for dog owners, breeders and veterinarians.

Over a year in production, this 6.5” x 8” book of 60 pages in beautiful full colour tells the story of Oliver’s fight against a little-known disease.  It includes stories from other dogs that have suffered from SM, and a section with clinical information.  Keepsake Memoirs was responsible for the ghost-writing and organization of the book’s contents.

"It truly was moving and emotional to read. The graphics were awesome and the quality of the print was really impressive."
          Rozanne T

All proceeds from the sale of this book will be directed towards the syringomyelia genome research fund established at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  You can help by purchasing a book.
